Glass Cube Project Chloe Leaper at The Drawing Cube

9 Norfolk Street, Cambridge

This summer the artist Chloe Leaper will be working in collaboration with Changing Spaces on an ‘Glass Cube’ residency project. This project will be exploring Leaper’s interest in spatial perception as an active straddling of the mental and physical realms experienced as conditions of connection, disconnection and flux. Leaper’s practice focuses on the delineation of space using 2D and 3D linear elements.

Leaper will develop an installation at the Norfolk street site from 1^st August – September 6^th followed by a week-long exhibition of the final installation with supporting drawings. During this time the space will be regularly open to the public aiming to demystify the making process by having the artist on hand to discuss the concepts and processes behind her practice. The space itself is fronted by a large window and is therefore continually visually accessible to the public.

Fine Art Photography Book for Romsey Art Festival // ongoing

Cambridge International Arts are calling for Cambridge photographers to help create a lasting legacy of the Romsey Art Festival in the form of a published book of black & white photographs.

They would like people to:

• Attend one or more of the festival events, in particular the art walks.
• Photograph the events attended paying particular attention to the international and cross-cultural elements of their experience
• Submit no more than 10 black & white photographs taken during the festival via a website by a certain date.

Panoramic: Sarah Blake 
Frameworks Window, Mill Road

Panoramic views of Cambridgeshire by Sarah Blake will be on show during the length of the Romsey Art Festival in the window of Frameworks on Mill Road. Blake captures these view of Cambridgeshire in all their diversity and glory, from fenland to chalk downs. She uses in watercolours and graphite to create these unique pieces of work.

Sarah Blake teaches art as founder of End House Arts, she also runs a regular Adult art group at the Cambridge Art Salon once a month, a friendly informal session learning and sharing art skills.

Romsey Mural Series with Mr Penfold
throughout Romsey

Mr Penfold  will create a series of murals across Romsey and beyond. Mr Penfold was born in the bicycle ridden city of Cambridge, UK. Growing up under 3 elder, creative brothers and artistic parents, Mr Penfold has always had a pen or brush in his hand. At the age of 18 he started working in a pub were he observed the regulars and started to draw them to pass the time. Many of the characters and features you see in his work today have some root to this time. After 3 years of pulling pints, he went on to working in his fathers print studio.

Two Steps Beyond with Nicholas Juett

Unique paintings in oils depicting a universal theme – to be human in 2013.

Not seen before, Nick’s recreation from pictures painted one decade ago shares with us a new take on those past colourful interiors – and an evolved painting style. These pictures reveal how as individuals we occupy space. By simply existing in it there is no need for exactness, and instead he’s painted for us a vague sense of space (holistic rather than specific). Not so new a tradition because many artists come to mind who have explored this theme, yet it warrants a revisit in 2013.

By moving away from painting his hallmark vibrant local streets towards his world of interiors, the artist offers both a smaller, less epic, and calmer representation. Once vibrant and more literal depiction of rooms painted ten years ago undergo a transformation. Smaller in scale, a blur of soft flesh-like tones capture that world – a thumbnail version, because as a mature artist he can now do this.

In these new ‘copies’ he has dispensed with the bulky old TV sets and he has also undressed the figures. Revealed are the typical ‘life class’ posed positions, an art tradition unnatural to norms of nudity (nude poses drawn observing a professional model at The Art Students League in New York, 2000.)

CamLakes Art Competition

As part of the Romsey Art Festival this August, Cambridge Art Salon and Limoncello are teaming up to run an art competition inspired by the CamLakes campaign. What might a Romsey Beach, or Cambridge Urban Park look like? No matter your 2D media of choice–illustration, drawings, doodles, paintings, inks, manga–they’ll be displayed in Limoncello for the duration of the festival. Sa’adiah Khan and Hugh Chapman of the Cambridge Map Project are offering workshops to help you develop your inner artist and express it in a way that can be real or imaginary, futuristic, historial, utopian, or socially aware. Visitors will be able to visit Manuela Hübner’s open studio, see original artwork where it is created, meet the artist and purchase original collages and marbled images as well as marbled cards, picture frames and paper.

“Marbling contains an element of unpredictability and surprise – fantastical, beautiful and sometimes whimsical shapes and patterns appear and inspire images that draw you into the magical world of fairy-tales and the child inside... I love everything that looks irregular, uneven, organic, worn, imperfect and somewhat haphazard – just like us humans whether we like it or not.”

The Blue Moon Café

LifeCraft writers and Mrs Saltbrigg present a collection of theatre pieces created as part of the national Time To Change Project. This project aims to challenge discrimination against people with mental health problems and enable speaking out about lived experience of these illnesses.

Mrs Saltbrigg runs the Blue Moon café she cares for all her customers, goths, dreamers, poets, the despairing, and proper bohemian artists. All are welcome. Music, poetry, performance and visual art based and created around an important issue.

Drink and Draw: YOUR FACE

Hope Street Yard, 12-4pm

Drink and Draw is a fortnightly social event for artists in Cambridge, held at Hot Numbers Coffee, just off Mill Road. They have a different drawing theme each time and also have group day trips and exhibitions. The group is open to all levels of ability and is very informal. It is described as having ‘a nice vibe’.

This event sees a number of Drink and Draw artists, who share a liking for portraiture, come together to create a portrait troupe. Groups of artists are often seen working together in tourist traps in capital cities throughout Europe – think for example, of Montmartre and the artists’ square. Drink and Draw: YOUR FACE hopes to bring this idea to Cambridge.

A group of artists who met each other at the regular local art social 'Drink and Draw' at Hot Numbers Coffee will be working on live portraits together in Hope Street Yard. If you want to get a portrait done, why not pop down? Prices start at £15.

Junction University: Bento Workshop

The Bento Workshop is a chance to get creative and put together a masterpiece – using food rather than pen and paper. A chance to learn the basics of assembling a Japanese-style lunch and the traditional range of products that go into it. Apples made into rabbits, an octopus cut out of sausage, or a rice ball made into a cute character – the possibilities really are endless. No previous cooking experience is required – just turn up and join in the fun!

The Wilderbase Project with TJ kids-  open day

Vinery Road allotments // 1-3 pm

The Wilderbase project is aimed at children, young people, families and adult groups who want to get involved in a wide range of outdoor activities and adventures. Activities include shelter building, fire lighting, outdoor cooking, team building, creative arts and other outdoor activities all based in a natural environment.

The Wilderbase has been designed and built with the help of local children, young people and volunteers and has a number of planting boxes which already have produced some fine vegetables, herbs and flowers. Staff are trained at level 3 and level 2 in Forest School delivery along with Specialised Outdoor First Aid.

CB1 Gallery Walk

Meeting at Cambridge Art Salon, Cromwell Road // 2-4pm

A walking tour of contemporary art venues of the Mill Road area. A tour guide will meet the group at Cambridge Art Salon, and will then escort visitors to each venue; Williams Art, Aid and Abet and ending up at the Ruskin Gallery. The tour will be met by a host or the Director/s at each art venue who will give a brief 10-15 minute introduction of the current exhibition with 5 minutes of time for a Q & A session. This walk is the first of a wider series of Cambridge Art Walks that will cover further arts spaces in the city covered on the Cambridge Art Walks Map.

Create your fanzine with Aurora Cacciapuoti

During this family event, the group will be led create small fanzines, adults and children together, to create a sort of family magazine. The idea is to get inspired and creative, to create something that can be kept as a family treasure or photocopied and shared with friends. This event welcome people between the ages of 7 to 100! Children must be accompanied by their parents. The workshop is for up to 15 people, so come early to avoid disappointment!

Creative Writing Workshop with Patrick Widdess

The Bath House, Gwydir Street // 2-5pm

This workshop will encourage participants to look at the world around them in new and creative ways.  There will be a series of writing exercises to get the creative juices flowing and participants will have time to explore the surrounding area and work on their own writing.

Patrick Widdess is an experienced writer and tutor. He is a regular at local poetry events and sometimes performs further afield. He promotes poetry and spoken word on his Cambridge 105 show Headstand.

In June 2013 he represented Cambridge in the Hammer and Tongue National Final team slam with Fay Roberts, Leanne Moden and Hollie McNish. He also reached the final of the individual slam in 2012.

Join in our glam CLOTHES SWOP, makeovers and catwalk gallery shots! Keeping textiles out of landfill! The ‘Mobile Salon’ will include fashion items, workshop activities, clothes swopping facilities and waste textile containers. Events are hosted by styling gurus, BeverleyHils!. ‘Eco tokens’ are given in return for textiles, which can be exchanged for pre-loved clothes or up-cycling workshops. Walking Paths with Elise Nuding

5:45 - 6:30pm //  6:45- 7:30pm @ the corner of Mill Road & McKenzie Road

This site-adaptive duet explores walking patterns that synch and unsynch, with odd, not-so-pedestrian encounters that play out as events unfold. It occurs alongside a wall, and involves two performers and sticks of sidewalk chalk. Designed as an hour long durational work that will be performed twice, audience members can stay for as long as they like, or choose just to pass by on their way to another event. Blending into and emerging from everyday pedestrian activity, this work reframes dance as pedestrian activity and pedestrian activity as dance. It lets relationships, both intentional and unintentional, unfold between the performers, the space, and passers-by, and leaves a trace of its happening in the form of chalk lines on the pavement.

This site-adaptive dance work explores walking patterns that synch and unsynch, with odd, not-so-pedestrian encounters that play out as events unfold. Walking Paths explores the manifold relationships that can arise from this simple pedestrian act.

An exhibition in the artists’ local pub which will be showing a humorous selection of beermats, prints and paintings dealing with existential and surreal themes. 

In this collection Elizabeth Eade has been examining the ideas of making strange and surrealism - the pieces vary from broken down images of ballet dancers to more graphic pieces using text. Monochrome features strongly in this show.

Join some of Romsey's most exciting writers as they traverse the boundaries of language, meaning, poetry and performance art. Expect a passionate, surreal, puzzling and occasionally hilarious start to your Saturday night...

Our compere, Patrick Widdess, will bring his distinctive brand of surrealism to the evening, as well as introducing our two featured poets: Ian Patterson and Rychard Carrington. Ian Patterson is a poet, writer, translator, fellow in English at Queens' College, Cambridge, and former bookseller.

Performance poet Rychard Carrington is 90% water. He is popular in the east and west, but not so popular in the north and south. Patrick Widdess is presenter of the Headstand poetry show on Cambridge 105 radio.

A number of short Open Mic slots will be available for new voices in experimental and risk-taking poetry. For those wishing to delve further into the world of the Cambridge avant-garde, there will be a bookstall showcasing vital and challenging new work from local poets and publishers.

‘It’s not a Cardie’ with Helen Judge and Cathy Dunbar

Six Bells Pub, 11 Covent Garden / 8.30-10.30pm

A fun, site inspired short film bringing the busy knitting hands of the Six Bell’s knitting group to the outside of the pub by Helen Judge and Cathy Dunbar. The pair filmed the knitting hands of 15 members of the 6 Bells Knitting group. From the footage they created a short looped film, this will be projected onto the outside of the pub during the evenings of the festival. The film loop was initially included in a bigger installation, which was part of the Knitters Arms at Strawberry Fair this year.

Futurecity Seminar with Future City

Parallel to the Marque development on Hills Road, Futurecity are leading a project with Hills Road sixth form architecture and art students. The project offers the students the chance to see how a public art project develops through each stage and the opportunity to develop a project of their own.

Students from Hills Road and representatives from Futurecity will be at Hot Numbers on Gwydir Street between 3 and 5pm on Sunday August 4th to talk about their project on a drop in basis. Please join us for a coffee and to ask lots of questions about the work we are doing.

Artist Sa'adiah Khan will he hosting this Drink & Draw event, the aim will be to challenge ideas of control and restraints in art through play. Bring along your preferred art materials (pens, pencils, paints, etc.) on the evening.

Dr Doodley's Drink & Draw is a free and friendly event for local artists (and anybody who likes drawing) to meet up, share ideas, talk and draw, or make things. A sort of social, with some drawings attached. For more information on other Drink & Draw events click here! 

Independent Cambridge

In 2010, the think tank New Economics Foundation voted Cambridge ‘number one clone town’, with a city centre full of bland national chainstores. Anne Prince, together with Andrew Houston and Steve Linford are 3 local residents and avid supporters of independent shops, so decided to tell the other side of the story by forming their own independent publishing company and producing ‘Independent Cambridge’, a guide to the many wonderful independent businesses in Cambridge.

Anne Prince, editor of the book, will share their story, their vision for Cambridge’s future and their ideas for how to help bring this about.    

This will be of interest if you like discovering and supporting the wonderful ‘indies’ in Cambridge, are interested in how to promote a more local sustainable future, or dream of publishing your own work.

“The Road” is a short film about Mill Road by Edward Jenkins and John Caldwell. This diverse community creates an atmosphere different from most other places.  The film sets out to express this with the inclusion of a number of  local shopkeepers on the soundtrack.  Wherever it's shown, it will provide a pleasant background to events at the Festival.

CAN members and non-members are exclusively invited to join Cambridge Art Salon for the launch of a new installation in their gallery by contemporary artist Peter Sutton.  Artist, photographer and Cambridge Art Salon trustee Mark Woods-Nunn will also welcome guests with a talk on how art in the community can uplift, provoke dialogue and inspire. There will also be the opportunity to network with community arts professionals in the Cambridge community. Love Letters to Strangers with Clare Crossman and Ellie Clark

Otto Café, Mill Road // 2 - 4pm

It’s not the kind of thing you normally write to a complete stranger but such an act can have profound effects on the writer and recipient.  Take this opportunity to contemplate and create an impact on a neighbour who you might have previously considered to be a stranger. Leave your mobiles, smart phones, laptops and other electrical devices at the door and join Clare and Ellie at Otto Café to pen a note.

Your notes will be hidden in public places for others to find after the festival has finished. This event is suitable for all ages.

SHINDIG // Romsey Arts Festival Special

St Philips Church // 8.00- 11pm

Held in the beautiful community space of St Philip's Church Centre, the show will feature contributions from numerous voices, talents, and personalities, harnessed into a two-part theatre of music and film. Led by Toby Peters and Laura McGarrigle, the narrative arc of the performance will be built from a series of collaborative rehearsals, documented by photography and film in the run-up to the event. A number of guest performers will also feature – full line-up will be announced in due time.

SHINDIG is a multi-disciplinary night of alternative music, alternative art and alternative entertainment. Born out of boredom and disenchantment with the typical “3-band gig” format, the events have been running over a year, which has seen a number of exciting performances that have spanned almost all mediums – from spoken word to film, from interactive art to dance. It is a place for collaboration, community, and discovery. We are honoured to craft a tailor-made show for the first Romsey Art Festival.
